LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE: Update on Streetlights

During a special mid-month Board meeting in February, the Board voted to approve the replacement of all streetlights within Turtle Rock. The option recommended by the committee, and selected by the Board, looks like the prototype just south of Sabal Lake Circle. Waldon Design, a design/engineering company, provides us with a high-quality product at an attractive cost. The configuration will be a combination of contemporary and traditional – a simple fixture above a fluted pole on a fluted and flared base. An advantage of the fixture is that the solar panel is built into the top of the lighting fixture, obviating the need to have the panel attached to the side of the pole, thus making the assembly able to withstand 150 mph wind forces. The actual fixtures we will receive have been further optimized since the installation of this prototype, including:

  • Tilting the flat top to a 6% angle, offering better sun exposure and resistance to dust build-up
  • Optimizing the solar panel, thus achieving 5W additional power and longer life
  • Recessing the optics (which can be angled to concentrate light on sidewalks and streets, staying away from homes—important everywhere except the Blvd.); these lights are now “night sky” compliant and could be installed along beachfront communities so as to not disorient hatchling turtles searching for the sea.
  • Adding a cut glass prism to reflect the light

A total of 200 new poles and fixtures will be placed throughout the community at optimized spacing intervals to provide as much even lighting to all sidewalks as possible. CLICK HERE to see a map of the entire community which shows the designated locations of all 200 lights.

The committee will oversee the installation process, which is planned to start mid June and continue approximately 5-6 weeks. During this time, it will be imperative that residents and vendors do not park on the sidewalk side of streets where installation crews are actively working. Emails will be sent throughout this process informing residents of the streets on which work is scheduled to take place. The community center parking lot will be used as a storage and staging area during the installation phase. A POD and a dumpster will likely take up several parking spots, and additional trucks from the installer, Lumiere Solar, will likely be in and out, and possibly parked overnight, until project completion.
